Safari!

Heidi Hi!

After last week's post about being old we're balancing it this week – Bill and I went to Longleat Safari Park (by ourselves..)

We left home extra early to avoid the Easter Bank Holiday weekend traffic but it did mean that we were pretty much at the front of the line for the safari.

We were given a CD to listen to as we drove around which gave us little snippets about each animal as we passed by… Starting with the giraffes. Apparently when giraffes were first discovered they assumed that it was a cross between a cheetah and a camel! (Nope, I can't see how that would work either..) Also with the giraffes were the zebras, I didn't realise they were that small! Although, thinking about it now, I wonder if that's because they were with HUGE giraffes?

Next, we encountered some rhinos (or 'real unicorns' if you've seen that meme?), cool cow things with MASSIVE horns, camels and ostriches. One particular ostrich decided to have a standoff with our car, It won – we reversed so we could drive around it.

Bill fed a deer with more enthusiasm than an excitable five year old. I was looking forward to seeing the elephant but as we'd arrived really early, she was still inside having a nice lie-in.

The lions, tigers, cheetahs and timberwolves are pretty impressive. Bit scary that the only thing between us and them is our car. However, I'd like to think that we wouldn't be their first choice of food, a larger car carrying a whole family would make a better meal 😉

After the safari we parked up and had a look around Longleat House. I quite enjoy looking around a stately home (Granny Heidi strikes again). The architecture – inside and out, the paintings and the overly opulent living really are something to marvel at.

The rest of the park is accessible on foot so off we trotted towards the other animals. We watched the penguins zoom around their pool, touched some stingray and giggled at some meerkats, to name a few, there's so much to see!

The final thing to do before leaving was the Jungle Cruise to see the gorilla colony, the hippos and the seals. The gorillas were inside having their jam sandwiches so we didn't get to see them, the hippos on higher ground but the seals were happy to swim alongside the boat in return for some fish. The guide was informative and funny, thumbs up Graeme!

A really great day out, why has it taken us so long to visit?!

I'm sorry if this post feels a bit forced, my iPad decided to delete my original post (thanking you kindly Mr iPad, NOT) meaning I had to start again.
